How do I get a racehorse?

You may already have a horse, but if you don't, listed below are the most common ways of getting one.

Sales

There are many types of sales.  One of the most popular are the two-year-olds-in-training sales. These horses have never run, but are "in training", meaning you get to see how they gallop.  Usually they are fit enough to do short, timed work outs.  These horses are not far from running a race.

You can also buy a yearling (one year old) or weanling (4 months to one year old).  These horses are not broke to saddle and are much further from racing.  Sometimes they are the best buy because they haven't had the pressure put on them to prepare for the two year old in training sales.

It's also possible to buy horses that are racing at the sale.  These horses can be examined by a veterinarian and you can see their racing record.

Advantages to the sale is that there is a huge selection at one location.  You can have a vet or any other professional assess the horse for you.  It is possible to get a good buy.

Buy Privately

Horses can be advertised for sale privately.  Advantages to this method are that you get time to thoroughly go over the horse.  You can have the vet of your choice and any other professional go over the horse in a pre-purchase exam.  You also have great latitude in negotiating the deal.

Claiming

Most races are claiming races.  This means that the horse can be purchased for a specified price right out of the race, by a licensed trainer or owner.  If you put in a claim, when the starting gate opens, the horse belongs to you, unless someone else also put in a claim.  In that case, the new owner is decided by lottery.
